Summary

When an injury throws a young, battle-hungry orc off her chosen path, she may find that what we need isn't always what we seek。

In Bookshops & Bonedust, a prequel to Legends & LattesNew York Times bestselling author Travis Baldree takes us on a journey of high fantasy, first loves, and second-hand books。

Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned。

Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it。

What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do?

Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine。

Still, adventure isn't all that far away。 A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons prove Murk to be more eventful than Viv could have ever expected。

Got an ARC。 It was everything I hoped for, sweet and satisfying。 Can easily be read as a standalone novel, or after you read Legends and Lattes, though I'd recommend the latter (the latté?)Warning: may cause you to crave several more books by Travis Baldree or freshly baked goods。 In my case: both。 Got an ARC。 It was everything I hoped for, sweet and satisfying。 Can easily be read as a standalone novel, or after you read Legends and Lattes, though I'd recommend the latter (the latté?)Warning: may cause you to crave several more books by Travis Baldree or freshly baked goods。 In my case: both。 。。。more

It wasn't long ago that I was raving about Travis Baldree’s Legends & Lattes, which went crazy viral in 2022 as a self-published novel before being acquired by Tor Books for traditional publication。 “Splendid doesn’t even begin to describe what Baldree’s created in Legends & Lattes,” I wrote in a review。 “I need more。 Now。”And, now, I’ve got more。But, inside, I honestly wondered whether Baldree would be able to recapture the magic and charm that made Legends & Lattes such a charming, cozy surpri It wasn't long ago that I was raving about Travis Baldree’s Legends & Lattes, which went crazy viral in 2022 as a self-published novel before being acquired by Tor Books for traditional publication。 “Splendid doesn’t even begin to describe what Baldree’s created in Legends & Lattes,” I wrote in a review。 “I need more。 Now。”And, now, I’ve got more。But, inside, I honestly wondered whether Baldree would be able to recapture the magic and charm that made Legends & Lattes such a charming, cozy surprise。 Dear reader, I needn’t have worried。Set many years before Legends & Lattes, Bookshops & Bonedust is a polished follow-up that delivers exactly what I expected, needed, and wanted—with a clear understanding of how a prequel can stand on its own while also making its predecessor stronger in retrospect。 Baldree’s got this cozy fantasy thing down, and the settings he creates, the people he populates them with, and the low stakes conflicts that arise are the perfect antidote to our world gone crazy。 I didn’t know if a prequel story about protagonist Viv’s younger days would appeal—I liked that she was older and weary, broken and needing healing in Legends & Lattes; I didn’t know if I’d be able to leave my favourite characters behind。 I didn’t know if trading Thimble’s cinnamon buns for literally anything (even books) would work。 But, it does。 Brilliantly。 I would die for Potroast。If you loved Legends & Lattes, you’re in for an absolute treat。 Go preorder Bookshops & Bonedust right away。 If you haven’t read Legends & Lattes, well, what are you waiting for? 。。。more

The perfect follow up to Legends and Lattes, it was so good to be with Viv again and to see a bit about how she became the orc we love so much。 It always has a bittersweetness because of the inevitability of the narrative but it’s sweet and warm nevertheless。

I must say the entire thing feels like a love letter to booksellers。 Fern captures the essence of a bookseller COMPLETELY。 From the copious swears to the fast switch to Customer Service Voice, she really embodies the type of bookseller I am。 The sadness of getting rid of old books is real, to an extent。 I can just toss all the David Weber into the trash, honestly。 Instead he has an entire shelf to himself。 Alas。Young!Viv is SO FRUSTRATING。 In the best way! She’s impulsive and slapdash。 Watch her go! Stop, Viv! Now she has to slow down。 If that ain’t a metaphor for burnout!Thank you for letting me read this SO EARLY。 It really resonated with the bookseller side of me, just like how LL resonated with the barista side of me。 I haven’t felt this satisfied with an ending since Desdemona and the Deep! I loved the end to LL but I wanted more afterwards。 While I will ALWAYS read a story based in this world, I felt like this one was done。 It was beautiful。 I wonder if there’ll be a short story in the back of BB where we see Fern visit Viv and her wife?BB was phenomenal。 Once it comes out, it’ll be up to us to give it a great story beyond the story。Potroast is as precious as the concept art made him out to be。 Y'all aren't ready for the absolute adorability of Potroast。 。。。more

I might have to go back and change my rating of Legends & Lattes to a 4, because it has stuck with me, ended up being one of my most enjoyed reads of 2022, and I did not hesitate even a second to mark this "want to read" when it showed up on my recommendations。 I might have to go back and change my rating of Legends & Lattes to a 4, because it has stuck with me, ended up being one of my most enjoyed reads of 2022, and I did not hesitate even a second to mark this "want to read" when it showed up on my recommendations。 。。。more
